Hiring BS, MS and PhD candidates in Aerospace, Chemical, Civil, Computer, Electrical, Materials, and Mechanical engineering. US Citizenship is required.

The Institute for Defense Analyses (IDA) is a not-for-profit company that runs three Federally Funded Research and Development Centers (FFRDCs). FFRDCs are centers that are sponsored by, and conduct research for, various government agencies. Graduate students in STEM fields have likely heard of some of the more well-known FFRDCs without ever learning the term “FFRDC”. For example: the “National Labs”, such as Los Alamos National Laboratory and Oak Ridge National Laboratory, are FFRDCs sponsored by the Department of Energy. The public-private partnerships offered by FFRDCs offer unique opportunities to meet the research needs of government organizations in challenging, cooperative environments.

IDA runs three such FFRDCs: the Systems and Analyses Center (sponsored by the Department of Defense), the Science and Technology Policy Institute (sponsored by the National Science Foundation), and the Center for Communications and Computing (also sponsored by the Department of Defense). Since the 1950’s, IDA has been providing the government with objective analyses relating to national defense and science policy.

Dr. Kirshenbaum is a UMD alumnus, having received a PhD in 2013 from the Physics Department. At this session, he will present some general information about the broad range of research topics at IDA’s FFRDCs. He will also present a more detailed discussion of his own research areas to give students a better idea of life at an FFRDC. Everyone looking for a fun talk about a likely unheard-of research area is welcome. However, if you’re looking for a job, researchers at IDA must be able to obtain a security clearance, so US citizenship is required.
